Drawing

Drawing

We have all picked up pencils and pens as toddlers to come up with our very own artistic creations that have won accolade from our proud parents, aunts, siblings, and educators. Introduction to drawing happens at a very young age as we sit down to make a mark on the paper with everything that we can lay our hands on. Drawing is a form of visual art where the artist uses a variety of drawing tools to make marks on paper or other two dimensional materials. While the instruments or tools used for drawing may range from graphite pencils, pen & ink, inked brushes, wax colors, colored pencils, crayons, charcoal, chalk, pastels, erasers, markers, styluses, special kind of metals, and electronic implements, the base material on which the artist or the draftsman makes their mark is mostly some kind of paper. Other materials that are used to draw on include cardboard, plastic, leather, canvas, boards etc. Temporary paintings usually find their place on a blackboard or whiteboard.

This form of visual art has been an oft used and is one of the most basic media employed for self-expression through the canvas of history. This is one of the most effective, convenient, and simplest media for communicating ideas to the public at large. The sheer range of materials and mediums that can be employed to practice this art form makes drawing one of the most common artistic endeavors.

Drawing, one of the most popular and common artistic activity is essentially the practice of marking lines and areas of tone onto paper to put forth a precise demonstration of the visual world onto a two dimensional surface. Traditionally, drawings were monochromatic or had just a spattering of color as opposed to the modern version of colored pencil drawings that may actually merge the boundary between drawing and painting. Even though similar media is employed in both drawing and painting, the western terminology treats them as two different art forms. Chalk and other dry media which is commonly used in drawing may actually find its place in pastel paintings. On the other hand liquid mediums may be applied with brushes or pens to create drawings too. Similar support materials like canvases may be used for both drawing and painting. Even collaborations of two forms are employed to create pieces where the paintings may have an under-drawing beneath on the support material directly.

Drawing has an exploratory nature of its own where there is a considerable emphasis on observation, problem-solving and composition. It is also used as a preparatory baseline for paintings. Drawing in itself has a lot of variations and classifications like figure drawing, cartooning, doodling, and shading to name a few. There are a number of techniques employed in drawing, the popular ones include line drawing, stippling, shading, entopic graphomania, and tracing to name a few. The quick unrefined drawings mostly carried out to convey an idea are called sketches.

Apart from the field of art, drawing is employed to demonstrate or represent building plans, machinery, circuitry and many such technical representations. These continue to be termed as drawings even when they are translated on to other mediums through printing.
