Why An Education In The Arts
An education in the arts is far from lucrative even in the evolved contemporary times when people are looking at education options where things seem to be a lot more stable and considerably a lot more acceptable. What does an education in the arts do for an individual and for the society at large? Why is it that we take up an effort to tech arts? How is it that art contributes to the education at any given level? There of course are many ways to answer these questions and more than one answers to almost all of these questions that arise about art and art education. Broadly we can sum up most of these queries in three categories that are listed under. These three are things that everyone looks to attain and art as we will see supports them.
Art means Work
Art has many aspects and qualities. It gives a creative release and satisfaction, a medium of self-expression, and is a strong communication tool. Apart from all this, art also is a type of work, a means to earn and make a living. This is what art initially was and in its essence still is from childhood to old age. The students who learn art or are studying it understand what it is to derive joy from work, what it is like to do the job or work to the best of one’s capability, what it is like to work for the sake of self, and what it is like to derive a sense of achievement or satisfaction from a job that’s done well. In the current scenario that celebrates the culture of average, of working just for the sake of working or completing a task as per convenience, it is imperative that the culture of doing good work is revived. It is important that we learn of the association of good work with personal fulfilment, social recognition and economic development. It is imperative in the contemporary world to be engaged in productive work and art is the most convincing evidence of work carried out honestly. There is much said about productivity and workmanship in the professional scenario and both these ideals are strengthened each time one commits to the endeavor of art.
Art means Language
Art is language of its own, a very visual language at that. It comprises of imagery that one must learn first to read, much like any other language. Art classes consist of making images or visuals and studying other visuals in detail and entirety. These images that one studies or makes eventually take effect on one’s requirements, day to day conduct, expectations, views, and on the ethics. This is essentially why an individual uneducated in the language of arts is only partially educated. A complete education or literacy needs to include a capability to comprehend, react to, and discuss visual imagery and language in its associate syntax. Hence, to carry the modern education to its completion, it is art education that stimulates language, spoken and written about the visual culture or imagery. Those that teach art work incessantly on evolution of critical abilities in an effort to inspire linguistic abilities. As young art students observe & describe, and analyze & interpret the world of visuals, their verbal expression gets substantially strengthened too.
Art means Values
Art and values are inseparable. Values about home, family, work, recreation, individuals, society, nature, environment, war, peace, beauty, ugliness, violence or love, it is all translated through arts. These values and the value system has endured the test of times as has the legendary arts from the past as well as the present. As an art teachers disseminates these values, there is no scope for indoctrination. As they are taught art of a diverse nature belonging to varied lands and people, the students are exposed to the expression of a range of human values and concerns. The students are sensitized to the impact of values on all kinds of human efforts and that visual culture can in fact affect their individual value choices. This kind of education gives them an opportunity to witness the way art effortlessly expresses the highest ambitions of the essence of humanity. An education in the arts puts the students in a better position to choose what is right and works for the greater good.
