Art Bigwigs Back The New Affordable-Art Website

Art Bigwigs Back The New Affordable-Art Website

There is a new website on the horizon which has on offer works of art that would be on sale for prices less than $10,000, this website is being backed by the heavy weights in the world of art professionals like the ex-director at the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou – Jean-Hubert Martin.

The focus of the company – Collectionaire is majorly on established and rising artists from the art scenarios that are not yet represented to their full potential. This company would be showcasing more than 20 different exhibitions virtually for artists from different countries like Iran, Oman, and Mozambique.

The co-founders for this creative company are Olivier Varenne, the international curator at the Museum of Old and New Art Tasmania, and the entrepreneur Valerie Konde who has a strong past and experience of working with Rocket Internet and Google.

In a joint statement the founders have mentioned that the exhibitions that last for somewhere between 40 and 60 days are in fact organized by highly recommended curators from the world over. These curators who have been handpicked by the advisory committee at the Collectionaire, select somewhere between 20 to 30 works.

The advisory board for Collectionaire is diverse and constitutes of dignitaries like the ex-director at the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou – Jean Hubert Martin, the senior director of the Saatchi Gallery in London – Philippa Adams, and the curator for Armenian pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2015) – Adelina von Fürstenberg. The entire committee do not work for any fee and provide the service for free.

Varenne and Konde further say that the advisers took the decision to serve on the board of Collectionaire was motivated by a commitment to extend help to talented artists who have not found the right channels for exposure to shine at an international level.

At the moment the artist selections for Collectionare are being overseen by curators including Paris-based Martin Guinard-Terrin and Rodrigo Orrantia – the photography specialist. There are however some shows that are put together by an in-house team too. There is an exhibition that was organized by Varenne of works on paper by Chiharu Shiota – the Japanese artist, including Net (2015) which is priced at $3,350.

The works showcased on the website come mostly direct from the artists’ studios with curators as intermediaries. There however, are some chosen artists who do have a gallery representation.

Varenne and Konde say it is at this stage then that an agreement is put in place between the gallery or dealer and Collectionair. Varenne puts a clear statement mentioning that Collectionaire is neither a gallery nor is it in anyway trying to bypass galleries. What is probably a little unusual is that Collectionaire would also showcase works that are consigned by private collectors.
